Svörd & Arrowtown Stonework

The Pounamu Knife

Unique, precious, and practical. Every blade is forged and tempered by hand in Waiuku. Every handle is carved from a single stone of kahurangi pounamu in Arrowtown. Every handle carries the grain, colour and history of the original piece of stone it came from.

One of One

Each knife is one of a kind

Have a look through the range while the one that catches your eye is still on the shelf.

Unique for you

The exact piece you see is what is shipped. Each buyer gets the unique knife they choose. No stock photography, no "similar item may be substituted."

Presented properly

Arrives in either a premium leather sheath or a presentation box for larger knives – built to be given. All knives have the option to include to our Svörd wooden knife box.

Breakage guarantee

Every blade is guaranteed against breakage under normal use. Pounamu is dense and durable, and it's cared for like a taonga, not a tool you'll replace next season.

Made by masters

Two craftsmen. Eighty years of combined trade. One knife.

The Steel – Waiuku

Bryan Baker

Bryan forges every Svörd blade himself in the south of Auckland, hardening and tempering each one in-house rather than sending it out to be mass-treated. It's the slower way to make a knife, and the reason the edge holds the way it does.
The Stone – Arrowtown

Lee-Roy Mullings

Lee-Roy (Ngāti Kahungunu) has shaped pounamu in his Arrowtown workshop for four decades. Each handle is cut, shaped and polished from a single piece of stone – nothing is glued, filled, or built up from offcuts.
As Precious as it is Practical
